The Trouble With Porn

Kind of a random post, but recently the webcomic, Sinfest, has done a series exploring feminist issues and i wanted to share a few comics in particular.

The first one shows the “mental gymnastics” we do in our minds when we do something overtly selfish and we are embarrassed about it.

This is one form of the mental “stress” or “suffering” the Buddha often talked about. Although such things are fun at the time, they often incur a heavy cost later in the form of unease, shame, or guilt.

The next day’s comic was even better. Here, the Devil, is planting some “stripper poles” (as in a strip-club), but the “sisterhood” comes in, and turns the poles into a park. I think there’s a really important message: stripper poles symbolize selfish gratification, while the park is something you can openly share with others. Similar to the mental gymnastics above, the first option may seem desirable at first, but has a “cost” to it, while sharing with others may not be immediately gratifying, but is more wholesome and makes us feel better in the long-run.

Similarly, going home and spending time with my daughter is a lot more satisfying than going out drinking “with my buddies”.

Ironic how “giving” gives us more satisfaction than “taking”. :)

P.S. Old post on a similar subject.

P.P.S. Another more recent comic by Sinfest on the subject.

Great post, friend. :) More men need to find encouragement from people with ideas such as that which you have expounded in this post.
